Default ABS failure and fix...

I bought a 2004 s2k about three years ago. Everything has been fine with it. A few weeks ago the ABS light came on and remained on after ignition. The car has about 104,000 miles. I tried using the jumper wire method to retrieve a DTC code without success. The ABS light would not blink at all. I opened the hood and looked at the ABS control unit. Right away I could see something was sticking out of the module. Even though the pictures show the entire unit removed, I did this with it still in the car.

I removed the four tamper proof screws and pulled the electronic portion off of the pump.

Inside the module I could see a capacitor had failed. It was in the same location as the protrusion on the outside of the case.

Honda doesn't sell just the electronic portion of the ABS system. You have to buy the entire thing for a whopping $1597.50!

So I looked on eBay for an alternative and found several places selling the same thing for much, much less.

Got the replacement, pulled the module off and placed it on the pump that was still in the car. Tightened the four torx screws, plugged in the large orange plug, started the car and no more ABS light. Yay!

Took it out for a test drive on an isolated road and confirmed ABS was now working properly. Problem solved.

I have the same problem and I have a replacement unit I got from Ebay just like you. It's sitting in a box in the garage. I hadn't thought about separating the electronics from the pump though.

Removing the pump would definitely take much longer and not something I'd have fun doing. So glad it turned out to be a simple fix. Are you familiar with how the orange plug is removed and put back on? For those of you that aren't, just pull up on the tab you see in the photo. As you pull up it'll back out the plug. To reinstall just line up the plug with the socket and as you start pressing down on the tab it'll pull the plug into position. Pretty easy.

Nice work. It sure must feel good saving $1,560 on this fix!

Nice job! The ABS modules are so cheap on eBay because they rarely ever have issues. When I parted out my car I ended up just tossing it because it wasn't worth holding out for a minor sale.

Keep all the good parts you don't sell, they'll help someone down the line, this car is discontinued and parts are getting harder to come by.
