Paint stripper is probably safer, you don't want sand getting in the crevices of the valve cover, it could get washed out by the oil and next thing you know you got sand in your engine.

Do NOT sandblast the cover. There will be trace sand no matter how hard you try to clean it afterwards. You will lose your motor.

It's happened to a few members here unfortunately.
