Default AEM EMS and NA Tuing

I was just offered a great deal on a EMS from a local S2000 guy who would like to take my stock ECU and 500 dollars because he is going back to stock OEM parts. He said he would like to trade his 03 in for a MY06 or MY07. My car is completely stock but I do plan on a custom HKS 70MM Exhaust and test pipe with in a month. My question is if I stay stock or do I/E is there any power I can get out of tuning the EMS? Thanks John.

There is plenty of power to squeeze out with your early generation AP1. Your '01 tends to run a bit rich in the top end of your rpm range, and with proper tuning, you should definitely be able to squeeze out at least 10-15 hp in the top range. There are plenty of AP1 owners in the "Official N/A thread" in the JDM forum that made a significant amount of power with simple tuning, so you may want to check that thread out. And if you add a free-flowing exhaust like the T1R 70mm along with the EMS and tuning, a total of 20+ hp gains should be quite feasible. I would also suggest lowering your vtec engagement point as well; a proper tuner should be able to figure out the optimal vtec crossover.

Certainly some gains to be had on early ap1's. Especially right before vtec (that is when we run the most rich), and as mentioned you can adjust vtec engagement to be a little lower. Also of course there is some extra power to be had adjusting spark/timing.

What about later generation AP1 (F20C2)?
I plan to do the I/TB and I was recommended by my mechanic AEM EMS.
Is it worth it without the exhayst? If no, I would go for mugen or HKS Hi power; I don't like very loud exhausts.

I don't think you will have a choice but to go to an EMS if you want ITBs.

BTW...ITBs are quite loud. And without an equally free flowing exhaust, the ITBs will give great mid-range improvement, but not give the peak hp gain you may be looking for. Not sure the HKS is that much more free flowing over stock...Mugen maybe some.

EMS will give some gains to the later AP1 as well...just not as dramatic an increase as for the early cars.
