Default Air Pump Question

Interesting that the air pump will allow flow either way when it is turned off (I bench tested it). Anyone know if there is a valve or valves downstream to prevent exhaust gasses from flowing into the intake, or is the pump on all the time?

There is an air control valve back by the firewall.

Is the pump necessary, aside from emissions? It seems like it would be a good candidate for weight reduction...

I am concerned about emissions to an extent, but not necessarily enough to worry about LEV compliance in a state that doesn't require it. Looking at the Check Engine Light would bother me.

Thanks, cdelena! I tried running the car without the air pump for a bit, and as expected, the Mugen ecu gives no mil (cel). I don't recall ever hearing the pump as I did preMugen ecu as well, so perhaps the new ecu disables the pump.
