Default Alternator Output ?

Last time my car was up and running I had a scangauge connected to the car and I noticed my alternator output would fluctuate between just over 14 volts and down to just over 12 volts. Last night I went for a ride with my friend's car and he had an aem gauge and his voltage would be steady at 13.5 volts, he says he never sees any fluctuation while driving. I was just wondering which way alternator is supposed to work or if the difference between the two setups is just the way the meters are reading output ?. Thanks for any replies.

Thanks bud, so that is likely normal since we are using the same gauge.

It is Nick (MyflyS2K), you might know as I'm not sure what he is running. He is reading off an aem gauge.
