So if I keep up my oil changes I won't have any problems, right?

Probably not - depends on the quality of the 5w30 you are using, the ambient temps, and how hard you drive. A 5w30 mineral oil can shear down in about 3k miles under adverse conditions - a 10w30 is less likely too.

Why not run a 5w30 in winter and a 10w30 the rest of the time?

Why not 5w-40? Is the first number the weight of the oil? If the 5w pumps more rapidly at startup(more critical in sub 30s temps)why would someone go from a 5w-40 to a 10w-30?

I read the first number is the weight of the oil, while additives make the oil perform up to the second number. If 5 is half of 10, then why would it have the protection of 40(as in 5w-40). This does not make sense here. Why not go from 5w-30 to 10w-30, instead of 5w-40 to 10w-30.

If a person wanted protection against thermal breakdown, why not use 10w-40(I know honda does not recommend 10w-40, just giving example)? A fully synthetic 10w-30 would be appropriate for california in the heat of summer. Todays engines have much tighter tolerances than yesterdays engines. For example, before multiweights existed, straight 30 was a common motor oil(three times heaver than a 10w)

I dont get this 5w-40 thing

Road rage, shed some light brother. It's gettin kinda late, startin to tweak, will crash for now. later

The last two digits dictate the viscosity of the oil at 100
