Rear of the car is sitting on another set of wheels/tires, the boom of the crane is resting on the bumper cover. It's easier to remove the trans 1st, then the engine.

through the bottom. i've done it by dropping the entire subframe, motor and tranny still bolted together. this was the easiest way with a lift.

Its possible. Remove valve cover and rear rocker bridge and oil filter. I have done it this way twice.

I also installed from the bottom by resting the engine and trans on a trolley rolled it to the front of the vehicle while on stands, bumper cover off, and used the engine hoist to lift the front high enough to roll eng. trans. under in place. Did this by myself also no worries.
