Default Ap1 and Ap2 transmission markings/codes

Hi ya'all!

My 2002 ap1 has a really bad grinding issue when shifting into 3rd gear hence I'm in the market for a used one. I think it is relatively cheaper and a better alternative for me. A local shop owner showed me 4 jdm s2000 trannys each priced at $1200. However, since Changing to an Ap2 tranny is the best way to go, how can I tell which among the used trannys he showed me is actually for an Ap2?? Even the shopowner has no clue which is which?

I recently replaced my '00 transmission and shopped all sources. I found the best deals at salvage yards where transmissions are priced based upon year model and miles on the wreck. Not counting shipping I found a range for a high mileage '00 at $450 to a low mileage '06 at $2000. This including transportation to a local yard and a one year replacement guarantee. I negotiated a deal for box from an '02 with 68K mile for $500.

It turns out to be better transmission than the one I had even when new so I am very happy with the change. I did not go for an AP2 just based upon price where it would cost me double or more.

There are some national salvage firms that will even price in shipping so shop a little before you decide. There may be a sticker showing the year model but for sure the output shaft on the AP2 has different bolt spacing than an AP1.

Now that I notice you are not in the US, ignore most of my comments... look at the output shaft/flange to determine type.

Ap2 trans on left. Look closely inside bell housing.

@cdelena: that's a very good price for used trannys there in the US.. If only its priced at $500, ill get it regardless if it's an Ap1 or 2!!! I'll still look around and see if I can find anything lower than $1200.. Thanks man!

@billman: I had this pic of yours kept in my iphone for a week now and I have noticed that web like thingy which makes a bit of a difference.. Thanks for all the info! Have read all ur posts here in s2ki! Very very useful!

Yup extra webbing, and it climbs right to the top edge of the countershaft mounting boss.

Just look at the vin numbers on the tranny. It tells you if its ap1 or ap2. If its ap1 the vin will start with ap1 followed by some numbers and if its ap2, it will start will ap2 n some numbers. If u want to find out what yr ap2, then u have to lookup the vin numbers. Cant remember which number n place of the vin that tells the yr of the car.

Many trans for sale have the vin removed. Or switched.

Use the pic.

Not to Revive a 6 months old thread but just to inform you guys that I finally got an AP2 tranny installed with new OEM clutch, Prees plate and new release bearing for $1300. Not bad actually! The guy at the local store doesnt know the difference and just asked me to get any. I chose the AP2 tranny hehe. Car runs like normal 5 geared M/T and feels like having an extra 6th gear. Felt different than the previous tranny but I like it! Thanks Guys!
