Default AP2 v1 (2004-2005) Engine Short Block Assembly Availability

I really want to buy a spare short block assembly for my 2004 AP2. I love the car and plan on keeping it forever and this would cover me for when the time comes that she needs a new motor (hopefully not for a long long time from now!). My belief is that if I wait until I need it 10 years down the road then for sure Honda won't be making the parts anymore (or at least that is a risk that I'm not looking to take). The part number is 10002-PZX-A01.

I have asked several dealers in my area and all are saying the fully assembled short block in not available. I wanted to see if any of you members with dealer connections show any availability of these blocks or can it be back ordered?

I suppose my next best option would be to buy the bare block and all parts and have someone assemble it for me. Anybody on here ever done that or know someone who would be able to do this for me? I would have to think that me buying all the parts and paying for the labor to assemble would have to be cheaper than say going down the fully assembled Spoon engine route?

Kings Motorsports offers short block engine assembly for $1,750 (labor only) however I would have to think that I could find someone equally as competent to assemble it for less?

Last question for you guys. My long term planning strategy is to get a brand new spare short block full assembly, thinking that the top end can always be rebuilt or a used replacement one sourced if there is something wrong with my top end rendering it non-rebuildable when that time comes. Any flaw with my logic here?

Thanks!

Why assume it's going to blow up in the first place? Are you tracking it or is it boosted or anything other then stock daily driving it?

Engine is all stock, in great shape currently and it's not my primary daily driver. I just want to have a back up block assembly on hand as I plan to keep the car forever and I'm not sure Honda will be making new engines for our cars 10+ years from now.

There have been threads on this before. AP1 blocks are long gone of course. Ap2 blocks became unavailable within the last year. I had been tracking them, thinking I might get one, and there were a few in warehouses. Billman was able to get one of the last ones.

Many here have gone 200-300K miles on one engine. The biggest killer is oil starvation and over-rev causing parts to cycle through the engine leading to destruction.

Take care of it and it should last a long time. There are a few that do very good jobs rebuilding engines. A good used motor is the way to go now if you need it.

See this thread I made: https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/114...l-shortblocks/

The last F22 shortblocks ever going to be made might be available now...

Somewhat unrelated but a Honda engineer told me this

OEM pistons are no longer in any Honda warehouse according to my sources in Japan. There is a S2000 tuner in Yokohama but even he says he hasn’t those particular pistons in years.

So Mahle pistons are our only choice, I'm about to pull the trigger on an OS set at 11.7:1. They include rings, should I use these or Oem 06+ rings?

Yes I have a good machine shop that does Porsche engines which also use frm liners.

Mahle pistons are known to be crap. First generation Mahle pistons were good, but the revised and widely available revised versions are prone to failure. So thankfully they are not the only option.

I know OEM AP1 and AP2 pistons are available from Majestic and Honda Village. I got my AP2 pistons and piston rings from Honda Village at the end of April.

I can't find oversize pistons, which is what I'm looking for, and for which I've been on an indefinite waiting list, and I'm seriously considering cancelling my order and just get some 11.7:1 Mahle pistons. If they're good enough for Porsches, and 80% of the LeMans grid, they're good enough for me.

Porsche != s2000. Mahle manufacturers each piston to the specific engine. In the case of the s2000 they are setting people up for piston failure.

Which oversized OEM pistons are you looking for? AP1 or AP2? Have you tried Honda Village (I can see they at least let you order the AP2 13030-pzx-a00)?

My mechanic received 2 long blocks last week. Ordered a couple months ago.

Brother-in-law works for American Honda in Torrance in the parts department. A manager. Been in the department for 25 yrs.

Honda's general policy is parts are available for 10 yrs after D/C of the model. In July, he told me that if he ordered one for me it'd be B/O till about October as far as he could tell. (my mechanic did not get his from my brother in law. We would have to drive to Torrance to pick it up. So we got it from a local dealer.)

So I wouldn't worry to much about it now.
