Default axle nut TSB question

Just wondering if its safe to loosen and tighten the axle nut while both back wheels are off the ground with the e brake on and car in 1st gear? Thats how i did mine so i just wanted to make sure i didnt mess anything up because the axle nut still makes the popping noise now. i was only able to make the nut about go from 12 to 1 oclock maybe its not tight enough? Or should i just assume its the hub and bearing at this point.... Also i only get the popping noise in reverse when the car hasnt warmed up yet. Thank you

Is the popping noise possibly from the rear brake pads moving inside the caliper?

Remove, grease, replace, 2oclock.

I find I need to have the car on the ground. Not even the park brake and trans combined can keep it from turning.

ok so i removed the nut greased the face and tightened to 2 o clock and still have the clicking when reversing before the car has warmed up. Seems like the click is now actually louder...
