Default Bad HID bulb?

Well my headlights on my MY2000 just started having problems last night...I was driving in the snow when i came to a stop light and noticed through the reflection of the car in front of me that my driver side headlight was out...So i turned my headlights off and back on and it turned on, so i thought it was just some sort of glitch...

Later on the night, i noticed again that the same headlight was out...I turned it off and on again and it turned right on, but i did notice that it was pretty dim and more purple than the whiter passenger side...

Well tonight i had a chance to check it out...Well i took both headlights off and switched the bulbs to maybe cancel out some causes...I thought it might be the ballasts since it did snow for the first time yesterday and maybe it got a bit wet...I switched the driver side bulb with the passenger side and surely enough the passenger side bulb is more white than the driver side...I guess the bulb seems to be the problem and the ballasts are fine...the bulb orginally from the driver side has a dim purple look to it and i'm not sure if this is a sign that the bulb is getting ready to go out?

I read that the lifespan of HID's was about 5-6 years (I always thought it was A LOT LONGER) and if this is the case, then they're due to be changed soon...anyone have any input?

Thanks
Ray

I know that when HIDs are on their way out their color output leans towards the red side of the spectrum. The reason I know this is because I started one up when it was vertical (I was testing) whenever I retrofitted my other car with HIDs, and as it burnt out over th enext week it turned redder. Of course had I read the installation manual first, it stated that you should never start it vertical...oh well.

In any case maybe thats why they look purple. If you do decide to fork out the dough for a new one, I would advise getting both replaced at the same time. If you don't you will notice that the new one is brighter than the one you kept

Yeah i dont know what else it could be...i checked the wires and none of them were loose or anything...and i dont think it could be the ballasts since i switched them, so i guess i'm stuc getting another bulb..
