Default Big End Gone

Hi all,

I have a 2003, Ap1 S2000 with 85,000 on the clock. Last week I was driving it and while accelerating it wouldn't rev past 7000. I let off the throttle and tried it again except this time it made a loud bang and for want of a better word died.

It did have a rattle for about five minutes beforehand, and there was a strange grinding sound which I thought was something to do with the wheels but now believe is clutch related.

I had it up on the ramps and took the sump off to find a pretty big mess. Big end is in about five pieces, sump has a hole in it letting oil into where the clutch is, con rod has split up the middle, Crankshaft has some pretty nasty gouges in it and the con rod has punctured a hole in the block.

Need a new short engine but I'm also curious as to whether the ECU would have shut the car down as when I put the key in and turn it everything happens as it should, but as soon as I push the button to start it, it dies. The starter doesn't even attempt to turn.

If anyone has had this or a similar problem any help would be greatly appreciated as I would rather repair the car than strip it for parts.

Cheers Tom

If you don't mind me asking... what caused the engine to meet this catastrophic end? Sounds like a big-time seizure, maybe due to a complete lost of oil pressure.

I too am curious what happened, that sounds very rare for these engines. But I am more curious as to why you are attempting to turn the engine over and why in the world you would be surprised that it isn't able to turn over? For God sakes man your engine is in peices it can't turn over!!! And from your description I bet your head is utterly smashed to all hell too, so you need a whole new engine.

I was also wondering why he was looking for a short block when that description clearly means the head is screwed long block needed i'm sure (then again, I'm not a professional mechanic)

Total speculation, but I am thinking dropped valve or loose spark plug.
