Broken rod due to oil overfill

This car does seem to take more than the 5.1qts as stated in the specs. A 5 quart container places the oil level at about the bottom X on the dip stick. and another half qt. or more to get to the top X. There would definitaly be some residule in the container to account for some error but not enough to account for this fairly large discrepancy.
I prefer to keep my level at the top x and the only way it can be done is to add small amounts of oil after intalling the 5 quarts,

I can't imagine a catch can would really have prevented this, we aren't talking about a huge overflow container like your cooling system has. Over a quart overfilled is a pretty substantial amount.
