Broken tip on O2 sensor
So I got a CEL code to replace my rear O2 sensor. (see my other post)
When I took it out I saw the tip was broken off. Looking inside the hole in the cat I saw that there is a metal bracket/shield/piece that was half covering the hole, and it had horizontal scrapes on the surface. The bracket could be moved with my hand. It had a hole that the O2 sensor projects through into the cat. So where's the best place to get a new (or used) cat, but that isn't going to fall apart on me quickly (the stock one lasted 116,000miles) or restrict the exhaust?
Talked with another guy who the exact same thing happen on his 04. Mines an 03. Here's what he had to say:
I just have a second, but I'll get back to you in more detail later. I had a similar issue on my 2004: Heard rattling, pulled the cat O2 sensor, which had no tip.
I pulled it apart and found that the cat has two cylinders of honeycomb, one in front and one behind the O2 sensor entry point. On my cat, the front had broken loose and slid back to chop off the O2 sensor nose.
Sounds like you have a hole in the honeycomb. Is that by design or from wearing on the sensor?
In principle, it should be possible to simply reattach the cylinder of honeycomb, and put in a new cat, but I couldn't figure out how. So, I bought a new cat and am now looking for ways to sell the old one."
