Default Burning Lots of Oil

Hey guys I have a 02 and i recently had the motor bebuilt because i mis-shifted. It was done by a very reputable shop. Anyways it has about 7000 miles since the rebuilt and seems to be burning lots of oil. The last oil change was about 1500 miles ago and it burnt around 2 and 1/4 quarts. Is this normal or should i take it back to the shop. What could cause this and i see no oil leaks.

thanks Jason

You should go talk to the shop who did the rebuild, 2.25 qts of oil is excessive for 1500 miles unless you were driving the car REALLY hard.

Yeah even for our oil happy cars, that seems excessive.

Mine would do slightly more than 2 quarts in a 3500 mile oil change cycle. This time around, it's done a quart (actually 1000ml) in less than 1500 miles.

How extensive was the rebuild? Did the shop hone the cylinders? New rings? This might be contributing to the oil consumption, especially if you've been VTECing the engine.

Personally, I think that 2.25 quarts in the first 5500 miles isn't excessive on a newly rebuilt engine. That's not excessive even on a fully broken in engine.

The rebuild included new pistons (Arias), sleeves, valves, valve guides, retainers, etc. etc. So far i put about 6-7k miles since the rebuilt. The last time i changed the oil was about 1500 miles ago with castrol gtx 10w30 and oem filter. I checked the oil yesterday and it took a little more than 2 quarts to fill it back up. I hit vtec a couple times a day and drive a little agressively.

Thanks for all the help!

Jason

so are you saying that you did not change oil until 5.5 k miles after rebuild? What oil did the shop use initially? Was run in oil used at all ?

What is the compression ratio? Do you have a turbo/supercharger on it? If so, was it on during break-in? How did you break-in the motor? What oil did you use to break-in the motor?
