Its an in-car, accelerameter based, performance measurement system. There are a variety of models available. We have one that has a tach hookup and can compute torque, etc. We also just picked up a used one without the tach hookup. Not sure which one I'll be getting to use.
In simpler terms, think of it as a G-tech on steroids. :-)

It would be a lot cheaper just to wire up a real-time temperature sensor. Whichever CAI runs coolest after running a given stretch of road, wins.
BTW, I've got a cheap module for my Visor PDA that plugs into the OBDII port. It shows realtime data for temperature, RPM, Speed and such. It may be all you'd need.

I think volume of air, via ram-air effect, is also important.
The proposed in-gear acceleration tests seem like a good way to test the total effect of temperature and volume of air. Temperature readings would be interesting additional information to get, however.
Eagerly awaiting results,
Ted
