took my car in today and got 15k service and also got my differential and transmission fluid changed there as well to have it on record in case it ever does go bad I can prve I mantained it. I brought along mobil 1 75w-90 gear oil (fully synthetic). When cashing out i realized they charged me for the diff fluid. I told the cashier that was wrong and she called the tech. He told her I didnt give him enough (i gave him a whole .2 qt more than he needed ). He said he had to add a very minimal amount of that gl-5 stuff (the oem s2000 fluid). I talked to my service rep and he assured me that it was a very minimal amount (just enough to top it off) and that the technician manager assured him that it will be 100% ok. Any thoughts? I assume the oem fluid is not fully sythetic. Is this going to be bad on the diff? Should I go back down there with another quart and demand them to change it again and reimburse my $10 for the extra qt. He even looked it up in the spec book after I told him it was only .8 and said that I was correct but the tech said they take a little more than a quart??????

the differential only uses 3/4 of the bottle you supplied, they probably were doing the tranny if they needed more than one quart. i'm surprised how these guys can be called "techs".

btw honda does not carry a suitable gear oil for our differential. the only differential fluid they carry is the VTM-4 for the pilot and the dual pump for the realtime awd crv. neither should be used.

The S2000 diff takes just under 0.8 qt. US. It DOES NOT take more than one qt. Even if he OVERHAULED the diff, it would only take 0.81 qt. He didn't have the car level if it did or he spilled so much of it trying to get it in that he ran short.
PLUS, there is NO OEM Honda diff fluid. If they put in the stuff for the CRV or the Pilot, even a small amount, you will damage your diff. It'll just take longer, that's all. The only fluid that Honda is "authorized" to use is to pirate it from Honda Motorcycle Division and use their hypoid gear oil for their shaft drive motorcycles.

For your info, have a look at these and maybe print it off and show them:

Before you show them this info, DEMAND to see exactly what it was they put in.

That's because some people have elected to OVERFILL on purpose. However, you have to have the car jacked up only on the left side to get it all in.

This is the Honda MTF and is the correct fluid for the tranny, however, our trannies take 1.56 US qt. for a fluid change. There is NO WAY that he should have even gotten into the 3rd bottle. I think either the tech is a complete clutz and spilled a LOT trying to get it in or he had your car on a severe tilt or they are lying to you to charge you that extra bottle. In any case, I don't think you should be recommending them to others to go there.

ps. I have personally done both these fluid changes and I can guarantee you that the numbers I quoted are correct. On top of that, I purposely OVERFILL the tranny by 200 cc and the diff by 100 cc. I can do this with 2 bottles of tranny fluid and 1 bottle of diff fluid. "Something stinks in the state of Denmark" and it ain't just the diff fluid.

dude im pissed i was driving around today after the service and noticed a faint whine but didnt sound like it was coming from the rear, i am going to call tommorow and find the part # for the fluid put in. I just dont want to give him time to research it and lie about what they put in. I hope this is not already effecting my diff, also wouldnt what you said make it nearly impossible to put more than 1 qt in like they said the s2000's "actually need"
