Yeah, you'll want to buy the whole cam tower set.

Check the cam for wear too.

I've never seen much information about these kinds of failures, but you want to explore the potential cause as much as you can. Finding replacements is hard, you don't want it to happen again.

Maybe check the screen on the vtec solenoid and make sure it isn't plugged with any kind of debris ? causing oil starvation issues . Unless the cap was over-torqued in recent times if someone worked on the engine. just guessing.

My guess is that it was an improper torque sequence during the last tightening.

That happened from running a long period with 0 oil pressure. Note the overheating and burning of the cams.

Loose camwheel bolt is the number one cause. As soon as that bolt becomes loose, oil pressure bleeds off from the camwheel into the chain case, starving the top end.

Dang

I recall reading a thread many years back about retorquing that bolt. Make sure it hasn't backed loose.

I took that suggestion. Loosened it, retorqued it.

Now I know the consequences.

Thank you for the response.
Cams and Caps (full set of 10) just came in. Back off cam wheel bolt and retorque to spec?

Anything else I should do? Planning to adjust valves.

Back off the valve adjustment screws all the way, set valve lash after tightening the cam caps. Pressure from the valve spring can put enough tension to crack a cap.

This is important^
Also follow the torque sequence from the service manual, think it starts from the middle cap then alternately front/rear.
