Default Can the Cat Converter set off the engine light?

So my check engine light came on, and the service guy says that it's because my o2 sensor is faulty plus my cat converter is bad. Doesn't make sense to me that both of these would all of the sudden go. And also is there some sensor by the cat converters that would trip the light?

Any help is appreciated.

Yes both can cause a CEL.

The sensors can fail, and so can the convertor. Sometimes the convertor can break internally and then break the rear 02 sensor.

There are basically two (sets) of 02 sensors, precat and post cat. they basically relay info to one another and if the post cat o2 sensor detects the same exhaust (ie high levels of crap basically not filtered by the cat) then it will set off the CEL. check ur sensor first and if thats good then dish out the $$$ for a new cat. hope this helps

Without the codes you're guessing at fixing the problem.

It's under the emissions warranty as long as you are under 8yrs/80K, You still need the correct code for the failure.
