Thumbs up Car makes "whistle/release" sound every cold start

Just bought a used 2003 S2K w/36,000 miles on it. On cold starts where the engine has yet to have any action, I get a temporary "whistle-like" sound...almost like something out of the movie "Matrix" or something. Is this normal?

It happens right after I start the ignition and happens about 3 times for a total of about 30 seconds. Is it the VTEC charging up? Sounds like an electronic charging sound. then a release sound.

Thanks,
Ryan

Do you have an aftermarket intake on it? When the car is cold, the idle is higher so you may notice the intake slightly more when cold if it's an aftermarket one.

I know it's probably not the case, but it's worth a shot.

Nah, no aftermarket intake on it. Just sounds like something is "loading" up and releasing. Leaning towards the pump idea as of now. Open to all suggestions though. I now know the VTEC does not load. Hehe

Suggestions... hmm..

Or the previous owner put this in the bumper.

Now that your done with the suggestions, here's the truth. Secondary Air Pump is pushing air into the catalytic converter so it will warm it up faster. This way it can be more efficent.

Ford use to do the same

I had the same ? when I got the car.

that's the air pump trying to warm up the cat to lower cold start emission, it's been covered 5.274 million times.

Now that's funny. We all know it doesn't warm up until we get to 88 MPH, then POW!!!!!

As stated above, it's your air pump activating for emissions.
