The 5mm socket wrench tip worked perfectly for me too. Damn the filter was dirty!

I noticed someone mentioned how expensive these things were. At Autozone, I they were selling for $19.99, however, I was able to find one on amazon for only $11.46 + free shipping (amazon prime).

Bought that and just replaced mine at 38800 miles. Man that thing was dirty.
Took less than 10 minutes.

Our top is down most of the year so all I need the filter to do is keep the bugs and other big stuff out of the air ducts.
I bought a Wix cabin filter and put it in the car, then I take the dirty stock Honda one and wash it and put it in the Wix box. Then every spring I switch the filters out and clean the dirty one and put it away till next year. Works good for me but like I said I just need it to keep the big stuff out of the air ducts.

Simply replace it, you would be hard pressed to remove any trapped mold spores, etc from the filter. As a temporary fix simply use a hand vacuum.

decided to throw the old one into the bin...cleaning makes no sense considering the low price for a new filter.

but i found the re-placement of the filter was very tricky...took me 30mins...i had to use lots of force to pull it
into the hole at the front and the end (in direction of the driver) was just luck...because you dont see anything

I just use soap and water, then rinse with the clean water. Like I said our top is down 99% of the time.
