IN my old celica what i used to do, that worked very well is buy a house furnace hepa filter.....like 4 bucks....and cut it to the same size as the stock filter, worked great and you get about 10 filters for 4 bucks! you can then change it at every oil change at virtually no cost.

If you are concerned or worried about Mold, Mildew, Bacteria, or Spores, OR have that bad smell in your car. Here is a simple fix.

1. Have the interior fan running in your car at full blast
2. open the hood of the car
3. expose the air filter (this may not even be necessary)
4. Spray a can of Lysol Disinfectant spray (your choice of scent is up to you, I prefer the 'White Linen" scent) in to the filter or associated area.

The interior fan will pull the spary into the various vents/channels etc. of your air system and kill the offending mold, mildew, spores, bacteria, etc. This is very inexpensive and very effective. Lysol brand disinfectant spray is a very useful and effective product. Used in Hospitals to kill many bacteria, including antibiotic resistant bacteria reducing the number of nosocomial infections.

Ask me how I know, I'm a molecular biologist that sells instrumentation to Hospital Infectious Disease laboratories, including a test for MRSA (methacillin resistant staph aureus). The leading killer of hospital accquired (nosocomial) infections. (80,000 deaths a year)

Bacterial exposure over long periods keeps the immune system working overtime, and there is some evidence that this reduces one's aility to fight really big infections over time, like pneumonia and such.

If you want to increase the efficiency just spray the filter with Endust and check it after a few thousand miles. Works great on the home system too.

ok you were right. it was my cabin filter that made the smell. I took it out and after 20k miles on the car this is what it looked like:

$30 from the dealer, $18 from H and A accessories, but i didnt feel like waiting for it to be shipped so got it off the dealer.

Damn... that is nasty.

I inspect mine every 6 months, and usually change it at the end of the year.

I just called my local honda to ask what they recommend for this service, and they said "you don't have an a/c filter!" Wow, guess that just ended all the service that they get from me....
My dealer parts dept didn't believe there was an S2000 A/C filter until they looked it up and found it. Then they had to special order it. Makes me suspicious that the dealer had never replaced one. Glad I did my own 30K service.
