check fuel cap warning
I'm going to try gas from another station that I normally would never go to and tighten as much on the outside as possible. I checked under the hood, under the car and in the trunk but see nothing out of the norm.
I think this problem is only confusing because after correctly tightening the cap (helps to grip the outer ring) there is a time- or mileage-based reset period. I only had this problem once, but it took a solid 2 days to reset on its own.
There is a logic sequence for the ECU to determine an issue. I went through it a year ago so my memory is not spot on. The fuel tank has to be between a certain high and low point, you need to drive for 20 minutes, temperature is an issue, and I recall the speed must be some relative constant.
It is possible for another leak to be present and not just the fuel cap.
