Default Clearing Electrical System

I'm still in break in and my friend, which was a former honda mechanic, told me that the ECU learns our driving patterns. So he said... since you drive under 3k the computer learns that, and adjusts timing for a slower driver and more fuel economy. He then said, when break in is over... to take off the battery terminal cables and place them together for like 15 seconds to clear out the ECU memory and start essentially from scratch. Is it ok to do that or will that harm something?

When he said that I got a little concerned because he's never worked on an 06 and the whole DBW System makes me a little nervous to mess around with the Electrical System. But I was also thinking... if it's bad then we can't change the battery. I would hope Honda would think about that.

And,no, it won't remember if you're a slow driver,it only adjusts for actual conditions;ie: fuel quality,temp.load,etc...

I wouldn't bother, once you change your driving style, the computer will adjust.

Normally you only see a benefit from doing this in cars with computer controlled automatic trannies. The tranny will learn your less aggressive driving style and not downshift as fast or hold gears as long as it would if it were "trained" by an aggressive driver.

I think he would be far better off to use jumper cables and connect them up to the battery terminals and clip the other ends to his gonads. The shock might give him a good enough jolt, that maybe, just maybe, he'll go back to mechanic's school.

You may want to keep him as a "friend", but you really need to find a new mechanic.

You can reset the ECU,anytime, and as often as you want;don't even have to disconnect the battery, just pull out the fuse, for a few minutes.
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

he has an 06. the pulling of the fuse can destroy the ECU if done at the incorrect time!

You must wait at least 15minutes after the key is turned off before unplugging the PCM. If you unplug the PCM while it's performing the SSD (self shut down) tests you can permanently damage the PCM
