I bought my Evo IX brand new, with 5 miles on the odo. I broke it in in a similar fashion: first 750 miles or so as directed by the manual - varying the throttle amount and revs, engine braking, and keeping below 5000rpm. Did an oil change at 750 miles and started progressively exploring higher revs, and after 1K I just started the beat the sht out of it.
I now have 70K miles on it, and it has never burned a drop of oil between changes.
My AP1 OTOH, which I bought used with 20K miles, burns a quart every 1.5-2K depending on how often I vtec. I wish I had the chance to break my S in as well.

Exactly what I do. It takes one day for UPS to get my oil from my distributor to my door. I really don't get the "can't find Amsoil locally" complaints...
Then again, I hate shopping in most B&M stores (especially Wally World).
