I have this same problem... Are there any pictures to locate the axle nut?

The live under the center caps of your rear wheels. Take your wheels of and you'll see them.

Billman, what is your technique for doing these? Jack the rear end up, e-brake on and torque the nuts? I can see the e-brake not wanting to hold up to 220 ft-lbs, is it safe to have the car in gear when torquing the nuts? I don't want to do any damage to the trans/diff. ...then I have to get my hands on a torque wrench that goes up that high!
220ft/lbs through the stock transmission?!?! That's way too much!! I wouldn't!

j/k. Tighten them as much as you can with the car in gear and the e-brake on. If you're having trouble, take the center cap off your wheel and put the car back on the ground and try again. Do not lower the car onto the ground without the axle nut relatively tight, or else you may damage the wheel bearing.

A trick for front axles, or any other axle nut on a car with a vented rotor, is to stick a screwdriver in the vane and then tighten it. Not possible on the S2000, since the rear rotors are solid, not vented.

Another place you can check for noise is the driveshaft. Unfortunately I've had the bolts come loose on me before and start clunking. I would have sworn the noise was coming from the R/F suspension or wheel so it took me a while to properly diagnose it.

Thanks eastcoast, I got the nuts tightened. I'll check the driveshaft bolts when I get a chance, but I was under the car doing fluids today and was looking for play in the driveshaft to no avail.

i have the same noise, i can get the car to make the same noise going forward as well, i have to shift from first to second at 3krpms, when releasing the clutch after engaging second stay at current speed for a second or two, then depress the clutch to go into neutral...that is usually when i hear that noise again.... but i try not to worry myself too much on transmission noises, if you figure it out, please let us know

my car needed new diff and engine mounts. if you think its the mount it could be

otherwise change the fluid and check for play in the mounts

my car has the new mounts and still makes a little clunk noise in the diff when selecting 1st gear from a stop. its a different sound than yours man

good luck

Thanks, I haven't found play in the mounts, though I know that doesn't always mean the mounts are fine. I'm just a bit skeptical that the mounts are blown after only 20k miles.

I'm still looking for any other suggestions, and thanks you for those that have helped thus far

I have the exact same sound. I only hear it when backing out of the garage.
Mine is an MY01 AP1 (EU).

Would also like to know that this is!
Although the car drives fantastic and smooth.

Same here. Which is what's odd, I would think whatever is making this noise would affect some other aspect of driving....unless it is something directly related to the reverse gear? But I don't know too much about how a transmission would produce this noise.

look around the big diff mounts in the rear, they may be busted. If they are you will see some nasty fluid around the mount. Those things are liquid filled.

Also, on the issue about how to torque the axle nuts.. pop the center cap out of the wheel, bolt it on, put the car back on the ground, set the e-brake or have someone hold the brake pedal then torque away.

It is curious to me, the front uses the exact same wheel bearing and the preload on that is 247ft/lbs. (IIRC)
