Clunking noise comming from under the car
well i went to the track a few days ago and was running the car pretty hard. after one of my launches i heard this loud clunking sound comming from nuder the car. Here i what i can tell you about the noise
- it sounds more like it is comming from the transmission, not as far back as the diff
- it only makes the sound while it is in gear and moving, it does not make the sound in neutral
- I can feel the clutch pedal and the gas pedal vibrating
- nothing is leaking from under the car.
I was able to drive the car home almost 60 miles from the track. The car drove just fine, and went into every gear with no hesitation, but it made the sound the whole way home.
After talking to some people they said it was either the transmission or the clutch, but in any case the transmission was going to have to be removed. After i got the transmission off There did not seem to be anything wrong with the clutch, the throwout bearing, or the flywheel.
Now I am thinking it is the transmission, but i dont want to spend all the money with out being certain that it is the problem. and after reading all the threads about broken diffs i am thinking that it might be the problem.
So does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the problem?

Jack up the rear.
Put it on jack stands => BE SAFE!
Remove the rear wheels.
Start engine.
Select a gear, or go through the gears.
(it helps now to have a second person in the car to rev it up a bit)
Crawl underneath and listen.
WATCH OUT FOR SPINNING PARTS!
Before starting, ect.: check the prop shaft, axles & CV's for excess play, ect.
Do the diff test: put it in gear and rotate one wheel, there should be no (clicking) noise and you should be able to turn one wheel without too much effort, the other wheel should turn in the opposite way.
Drain diff oil.
Look for metal bits in the oil.
You can see the ring gear through the drain hole.
Be carefull not to let hot oil drip in your eyes!
Have new diff oil ready: your manual recommends a singe grade SAE 90 GL-5.
