clutch case is out. need help inspecting
Ok, so i've had ticking noises inside the pressure plate / clutch area. Everything is unbolted and disassembled. I'm getting ready to order some replacement parts. But before I do, I just wanted to double check with you guys. I'm not quite sure what to expect.
here are my questions:
Q1. I can shake the bearing with my fingers and it would move about 3mm loosely - it's still inbetween the pressure plate and the clutch. is this movement normal?
Q2. when removing the pressure plate, the manual says to use a special tool (along with a special tool needed to remove the clutch). have any of you found a cheaper / more convenient tool (or just an alternative way) to remove that stuff?
Q3. Now that everything is disassembled, any tips & other things I should inspect / consider replacing?
Q4. the shifter fork has about 2mm of play when it's installed into its holder. is this normal? I can tilt it about say 3 degrees up and down.
more questions to come!

Q1 - yeah, sounds normal.
Q2 - a screwdriver and one of the bolts to use as an "anchor" to stop the flywhel from turning.
When putting it back together just eye-ball to line up the clutch disk splines with the pilot bearing in the flywheel.
Q3 - look for burn marks on the flywheel and pressure plate.
Carefully check the clutch disk and the springs.
Q4 - maybe you can bend the retainer a bit so it has less movement?
Can you wiggle it around when its pressed in its seat like it would be when operating the throwout?

i took some pics:

and here's a direct link to a bigger picture of the whole pressure plate

As far as your questions,
Q1: Sounds normal.
Q2: The special tool is not really needed. In your case, you will be replacing the parts so it should not do any further damage.
Q3: Just do a general lookover of everything. Clean as needed. Look for metal shavings, grease, etc.
Q4: I don't know about this one?
As far as replacement of parts. Get a clutch that is suitable to your driving conditions. Replace the flywheel, they are NOT re-surfaceable (Confirmed by 3 Honda technicians at three different dealers). Some have said it is possible, but why take the risk. It saves you from having to tear it apart again if there is chatter/vibrations due to a re-surfaced flywheel.
From the pictures, the presure plate does have heat soak on it. Some areas more than others and that is obviously dictated by clutch engagement.
Basically what you going to need is a new clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, and flywheel. Also while you have it apart, throw some new MT fluid in it too.
Best of luck!

In the last pic, the overview of the flywheel still on the crankshaft, the top starter bolt still peeks through its hole.
To remind you?
That pic is on its side too.
Anyway.. is that an ACT PP?
And what FW?
Allready spotted the "Honda" on the OEM FD.
Maybe replace the throuwout guide (on the trans) too if at any time the throwout guide wasn't lubed.
The cavity in the throwout needs to be filled with EP high temp (urea) grease.
Also, clean and lightly lube the splines on the trans input shaft.

the pp is a rebuild with ACT
the flywheel is toda
the clutch disc is stock
i'm probably going to take the flywheel to a clutch shop and see if i can get it resurfaced / what's recommended.
do you guys think the pp can't be resurfaced?
