Default Clutch Delay Valve Symptoms...

Hello all,

Last night I was out for a spirited drive, and I have noticed that when I perform a 1-2 upshift or 2-3 upshift at redline, there appears to be some slippage of the clutch, and the power is not immediately delivered to the rear wheels. It sounds suspiciously like what people describe as the AP2 clutch delay valve symptom, however I have an '03 AP1. Did any of the AP1's come with the delay valve?

When I take the car to redline and shift, the RPM's kind of "hang" around 8900 for a second until they drop down to the proper RPM for the next gear. Try as I might, I cannot chirp 2nd gear . I'm pretty sure it's not my driving/shifting, as I have driven another AP1 before and been able to bang home some pretty good shifts where the tires chirp and the rear end squats. I can't do this in my car though .

Some specs on my car: I bought it used a couple months ago with 3400 mi, (from a guy who didn't seem like the type to abuse the car), and I have since put another 1400 mi on the car. All told, the drivetrain has less than 5000 mi on it.

Has anybody had this problem or know what it is?

Thanks!

If you have a late model 03, its possible you might have the new slave cylinder. I remember reading about it but that information was never confirmed.

Here's the thread for reference:

BTW, what color is your slave cylinder? If its black, then you have the old slave cylinder. If it is silver, you have the new one with the delay.

You have some slippage of the clutch.
There is no delay valve on your car's clutch slave. The slippage could be from an actual degradation of the clutch itself or it may be from your driving technique. To determine which one it may be, test the clutch in the "old fashioned" way by mashing the throttle in 3rd from about 3500 rpm (foot completely off the clutch). Do it on a slight incline if you have a long hill. If your clutch is on its way out, you will slip in this scenario. If it holds relatively well, it's your shifting technique (clutch/throttle/shift coordination).

Thanks for the suggestions.

-I read through that old thread about removing the delay valve, but nobody determined whether or not any '03's came with the delay valve. Has this issue been resolved? Is there a specific VIN range that has the delay valve?

-I have not been under the car just yet, but I will try to take a look tonight to see what color the cylinder is. Does anyone have a photo of what I should be looking for?

-I will also try xViper's 3rd gear technique. I like to think that I'm not the problem... never had any problems with any other car previously...

Here's a picture of the new and old slave cylinder side by side:

Thanks. I don't know which is worse:

-Finding out I HAVE the delay valve, and needing to change it, or

-Finding out I don't have the delay valve, but my clutch is slipping... at 5000 mi(!?)

I want to get under the car right now and look... however I think my work would frown on a 30 minute "look under the car" break...

It would take you 1 minute to look. Simply look underneath the car at your transmission. I believe it's going to be on the left (driver's side) of the transmission. You will see it as show in this picture:

I have had the same exact symptoms with my 03' AP1. The car has about 7000miles and has always been like this. I have been suspicious of a delay valve on it.

Bad news: It's black... which means: No delay valve

I'll go for another spirited drive sometime this week and make sure it isn't me.

Any other ideas? Can you guys figure out how a clutch could be slipping after only 5000 miles? I know how to drive... and heck, even if myself and the previous owner didn't know how to drive, 5000 miles is still pretty young to be getting slippage, correct?

This only comes up under heavy load shifting by the way, no noticable problems around town...
