You’re right. It’s confusing, and also a perfect example of a manufacturer “not seeing the memo”.

Your comment brings another question: If you order coils for a 06-09, will you get 04-05 coils? It’s this instance that would damage those 04-05 coils, according to the manual.

Well there are clear warning lights on the dash to tell the user stuff is disabled. But there are always lawsuits that can happen regardless of course. Lawsuits go strange ways. Cant forget the whole "unintended acceleration" thing A guy got out of jail for wreckless driving in MN (that killed a few people due to his driving) after that occurred because he was driving a Camry. A 1996 camry that had no drive by wire and could not have possibly had this issue (even if said issue even existed), and the brakes and throttle were still intact and worked fine after the crash. So you can never predict how the courts will go on this stuff.

@9KCanuck did the ones you received that did not fit have the R stamped on them?

Those were NGK not Denso, so the labeling was totally different. All those ones had was a printed part # on the top -- "NGK U5099 04H23".

Awesome info in this thread

I wonder why they still make an AP1 specific part number (Honda and Aftermarket OE) if 04-05 coils work just fine in AP1's.

Now I have a coil pack story for you all. In summary my AP1 is supercharged and tuned on AEM Series 2. Runs great! I had 4 new Denso 673-2301 coil packs installed and running well until one day when I ended up with a misfire that would see cylinder 4 losing spark and me limping home with as little throttle input as possible on 3 cylinders (fortunately I was close to home every time). I would have to swap out cylinder 4's coil pack to get it running on all 4 again. The culprit was fake NGK plugs bought from Amazon which I didn't know were fake. The gap opened up like crazy causing breakup at 7 grand in WOT/VTEC/Boost and cylinder 4 losing spark immediately afterwards.

I swapped the fake plugs out for authentic NGK and the problem was solved. However...cylinder 4 only runs with an AP1 specific coil pack - OEM or Denso 673-2300. It does not run with AP2/Denso 673-2301 BUT, the 3 other cylinders run with either those '04-05 AP2 or AP1 coil packs...

I feel like the Series 2 is rejecting any coil pack other than an AP1 coil pack in cylinder 4 for some reason. Thoughts??

My car, 2003, purchased new:

-#3 coil fails at 145k, instant misfire, and flashing CEL
-disconnect #3 injector in order to drive home safety, and eliminate engine damage from cylinder wash-out
-I currently have 15k miles on 2004-2005 coil packs

I have spent a number of years going all over China. I have seen how sophisticated fake products can be. That includes the aviation industry. Phony aviation parts can have catastrophic implications for equipment and the lives of people. A lot of money is the attraction.

Amazon cannot possibly screen fake from authentic products. I have been burned and I am extremely cautious purchasing the "real deal" via Amazon. For critical components I will go to the manufactures website to obtain.

Lesson learned. I will stick to reputable parts stores where I usually buy my auto parts from because they always sell me the originals, not fakes.
