Default Compression Testing Without Starter Motor

As the topic states....Is it possible to check the compression on a motor by just manually turning it over with a wrench on the pulley? I'm going to check out this motor tonight and it doesnt have a starter motor on it....

I would probably expect the numbers to mabye be lower but at least be even. (given the motor is good) Also noob question but does the crankshaft turn clockwise from pulley/accessory belt side?

I believe it's going to be a bitch to turn the motor over my hand with the plugs in. Hope you've got a nice strong wrench with a long handle.

Well I took all the plugs out so it wasnt too bad to turn over. I think the cylinders are dry though cause the engine hasnt been running in a long time, first try i got all 4 cylinders around 100. then second time around all the cylinders read 150. Is this okay? I was thinking of maybe pouring a bit of oil into each cylinder but i still dont know if i will get a proper reading turning it over by hand? Any input?

no it wont be accurate by hand, just use a cylinder leakage tester, it'll be better data anyway
