Comptech filter cleaning
The time has come to clean my foam filter. I should have ordered the cleaning/oiling stuff from Comptech when I had the chance, but I forgot. I want to get it done tomorrow when I install the replacement airbox/lid that just came in from them. I know K&N sells a filter cleaning kit localy that has filter oil in it. Will this oil work on the foam type filter like Comptech uses? I am thinking yes, but I just wanted to put it out here in case someone has had any issues with doing this before. thanks!
K&N cleaner (like many) will work. The K&N filter oil is red and spurts in a stream designed to wet a pleat at a time. Although it will work it may not be the best choice on the CT foam filter.. the JR stuff will probably work better.
OK, I swaped in the new Comptech box and lid, and I must say it fits much better although still not perfect and the hole for the hood prop is still a PITA.
As far as the cleaning/oiling went, I picked up the K&N recharger kit. The kit came with a detergent spray that took all the old oil and gunk off nicely. The K&N oil came in an aeresol spray can and was a fine mist, not a stream as stated above (maybe a different type of bottle?). The oil has a red dye in it which I liked. It makes it much easier to see where you have covered and you can get everythign very evenly. According to the literature, the red dye fades away over time, but the oil remains. One thing I must say is that you absolutly have to let the filter dry 110% before applying the oil. As you know, oil and water don't mix and it will bead up if not. This will happen with any oil. So, in short, if you need to clean your Comptech filter, K&N is a viable replacement for the stuff Comptech sells and is probaly cheaper and more available localy. the kit cost me $10 at Autozone.
On another note, I discovered that my filter had become dislodged from the piping. Now that I ahve cleaned and fixed the piping, the car feels MUCH more responsive and powerfull according to the butt dyno. the filter wasn't too dirty, so I assume the dislodgement was creating some type of airflow problem, be it a swirl effect or otherwise. If you have the chance, check your filters to be sure they are sealed properly, made a HUGE difference.
