Actually that's an old wives tale /urban myth, you can't boil a frog by slowly increasing the temp of the water, it'll jump out long before it comes to harm.

Just so we're clear on the original question:

You're imagining it.
no, he probably wasn't imagining it, did you even bother to read what spitfire posted? the GL-5 additive package needs to be in good shape because of the tremendous stresses inside the differential...therefore a worn out oil will result in poor performance...I plan to change mine every 15k

I believe the 'OLD' SAE 90 specification is now SAE 110. Just an FYI (I could be wrong). What is Honda recommending in the 2008 manuals I wonder?

Well I evenned the tires up and I still think it "locks in" better when you power on the way round and out of corners.
I could be imagining it though

The Torsen LSD uses friction to "lock".
Old oil may have lost its EP (Extreme Pressure) capabilities making the Torsen behave differently, especially coming out of corners under power.
This I have experienced myself, sudden understeer on small roundabouts.

It felt like the inner rear wheel pushed the car forwards in stead of around the corner.
As if it was locked too much with the outer rear wheel (making more revs)
At first I figured I had a steering rack problem or one tire with low pressure.
Nope.
Fresh oil (SAE 90 GL-5) "fixed" it completely.
The old oil came out black AND was pretty thin (cold!) compared to what went in.

No it doesn't. It uses a worm gear.

You can use water, grape jelly, air or diff fluid. It will still lock just the same. Negating the need for lubrication, ofcourse.

The diff ONLY uses the oil for lubrication.

Yeah..... sure.
Worm gear by themselfs don't lock or do anything.
One typical thing worm gears do have is that they produce axial forces when they transfer power (torque)
Why don't you put air in your diff and show us how well it still locks?

Negating the need for lubrication, ofcourse.
Ohh.. wait... you need lubrication too?
So lets see... it will work with air but you still need to lubricate....?
