So the time has come to make the post.
I have had the clicking in the rear since ownership. (48,000 miles) I have tightened the axle nuts to no avail in getting rid of the sound. Sometime in the past few months I started noticing the rear had the shakes on occasion and that my overall ride wasn't as smooth as it had once been.
Axle nuts, CV's check Well in the past week all noises have doubled. I now have what is more of a grinding noise from the rear at any speed under 30mph, whether in gear or out of gear and it only gets worse as I get slower. The sound is there regardless if I'm on the brakes or not, and also now makes popping/clicking if I incorporate turning into the equation. The sound also diminishes as it rotates, as in at some point in the revolution it's louder then another like something is warped. The noise is almost identical as the sound of brake pad wear indicators wearing on rotors, although the pads are fine.
Mileage is apx 68,000 miles, fluid has been M1 75w-90 since I have owned it, changed 3 times now.
Does this just sound indicative of the 2 major issues usually associated here, or in your internet opinion do you think this sounds like the above issues and a DIFF problem?
I plan to put the car on stands and see if I can determine the cause, although was looking for any direction in tests I could perform, items to look for, etc... to help eliminate or determine my exact issue w/o tearing stuff apart?
I know the basics in looking for play, leaks, etc...
Well after getting under the car tonight I'm still not positive.
There is definately play in the axles...
Although the majority of the noise sounds like the differential. I did change the fluid while I was under there and did come across some metal shavings. Nothing large and nothing too abnormal for a differential from what I have seen from others in the past, but still not good.
I thought it was possible it could be a wheel bearing, but there is no real sound towards the hub. I listened at the diff and that is where the sound is most prominent. When listening at the hubs, wheels, and along the shaft, the sound is almost definately at the diff.
Also today after the fluid change everything seems a bit quieter, making me lean more towards the diff. ~possible placebo effect~
I could get the car to make the noise when spinning the wheels by hand w/ the car off and out of gear, although at idle speeds in first gear at about 6 mph I couldn't really duplicate the noise. The closest I got was w/ the wheels spinning I grabbed one wheel at a time and almost completely stopped it... as it slowed the noise would start, but quickly diminish.
I'm going to purchase complete new axles or CV sets and nuts here shortly and see if that takes away most of the noise. I know both of those TSB's need corrected anyway. We shall see if that takes care of the problem or if I'm looking at a new diff soon.
you will always have metal shavings on the plug when you change the diff fluid.
however, we should clarify "metal shavings".
you should NEVER see anything larger than tiny glitter size specs of metal. it tends to crud together on the drain plug, so be sure to wipe it with a rag, and check the rag for metal fragments. as long as you have nothing but those tiny little shavings/glitter you're fine.
That's all there was, the glittery shavings.
Like I said above "Nothing large and nothing too abnormal for a differential from what I have seen from others in the past"
I still took a picture of the plug to get others opinions.
I truly appreciate the response.
Haven't driven it yet, but pulled the hub last night and the bearing was shot!! The hub had more movement than the million man march.
So a for hatch4raceb16.
When I get it pressed back in today I will verify that took car of my issues, but thanks for the input. The more the noise got worse the more it sounded isolated and to be coming from the passenger side.
Bearing took care of the immediate problem.
Although yes I need to replace the CV cup or the axle all together. That noise/issue is still there.
