Default Stupid me...

Hi,

I was doing a cabin filter change last week using a 5mm socket to remove the clips as suggested by the faq. Everything was done in a couple min. but stupid me... I left the 5mm socket on the front beam then I proceeded the drop close the hood. Of course the hood didn't close and I look under and notice the nice little dent under the hood the socket made, but no socket in sight. I just figured it fell out somewhere since then, but yesterday/today I've noticed this really annoying loud heat shield type rattling noise at around 4500 rpm... any suggestions on where to go looking under the hood? Thanks. =)

Hmmm, since you are the one who knows where you left that socket, you are the best one to go "fishing" for where it might have fallen.

I checked all the visible spots under the hood. I even tried to guess possible trajectories based on the small dent under the hood, but no luck. I was hoping there were some common spots where a small object like a 5mm socket could possible get lodged behind out of plain sight that would cause a rattle... Thanks.

Take some fast turns and it might roll out if it is still in there. Good luck though...maybe use something magnetic and go over where it might have fell into the engine bay. Do you mean you put it on the radiator support where a cooling plate would go?

LOL. I was actually trying to think of a way to get a harmonic vibration going in/on the car while it was stationary so the object might make the noise. I like your idea better.

Is using a magnet safe? I'm a computer engineer so magnets scare me... Yes I put it on the radiator support beam and drop closed the hood on it from pretty high up since my K&N FIPK is peaked a bit in the corner and takes a little extra height to drop close =). Anyways thanks for all the suggestions. I'll check the pan later tonight. I think I searched the floor for like an hour to see if it fell out... my neighbors must of thought I was crazy.
