I've adjusted my valves a few times. Wanted to do them the second time to try a different degree of snugness on the feeler gage.

Question is if I've adjusted the exhaust side to .010 and the intake side to .008 (min spec's per Helm/Honda S2000 shop manual), can you provide a real-world explanation or example of what "slight drag" is when determining if the adjustment is too tight or too loose on the correct spec. feeler gage?

I would describe my adjustment to being snug on these feelegageses. I can slide the gage back and forth without having to force the thing but there's definitely a consistent "snugness" on the gage.

Let me know if I need to clarify my question...

Thank you much.

Maybe you could have PMd him or posted it at the end of this thread instead of starting a new one to get a specific person's attention?

XVIPER,

I understand what you're suggesting however I was hoping that a helpful thread for all could be developed based on Gernby's response to my inquiry. I've searched through quite a few threads and have not seen anyone touch on this vague ("slight drag") measurement of clearance.

If you feel it is appropriate to move this or draw attention to it in a more effective manner, feel free.

Thank you for attending to this post.

If you're trying to set .010 clearance:
  • you should feel "some" drag on a .010 feeler
  • a .011 feeler (.001 over target) shouldn't go in at all
  • a .009 feeler (.001 under target) should be completely free

O2, I see what you're trying to achieve and I agree. I think I'll try and "merge" this thread with the one I linked. I'll have to move this to "Technical" to do it, as that's where the other thread resides.

I set the valves on my Camaro a few weeks ago, .024 and .026. Without feeler gauges. I simply palm the rocker, with my index finger wrapped over the end, and my fingertip across the gap from the rocker to the top of the valve spring. Rock the rocker arm up and down and adjust the lock screw until my fingertips reach .024 or .026 inches. Then, grab my breaker bar and tighten the base a 1/4 turn.

dhayner,

Thank you for your input. I may just have to double check that I wasn't too aggressive in getting the valves on the tight end of the minimum specification.

There just seems to be this natural inclination to get the valvetrain next to "inaudible" even though it's not possible nor a good idea.
