Default Do Engine Codes save in computer? buying car tomorrow!

Im looking at a s2000 in michigan where cars dont have to go through emissions. I am in Chicago however where we do. The car is tucked and shaved, and the air pump is removed which the seller says is the reason for the engine light coming on very rarely. He says it comes on just a couple times a year. My question is...do these codes save in the computer or should I be fine running it through emissions as long as the light isnt on? My brother has a 2000 honda civic and he simply pays a shop to reset the codes and then runs over to emissions which works everytime. but ive heard people say that shouldnt work because the codes should save. the s2000 is a 2000 if that makes a difference. any help would be greatly appreciated and as im going to see the car tomorrow. thanks

I recommend that you either pay a licensed mechanic to do a complete checkup with writtem report. Otherwise run away in the opposite direction and wait for a low mileage, properly maintained, S2000 in unmodified form.

My guess is that you are probably going to buy someone elses nightmare. After that it can get really expensive.

Izzie makes an air pump simulator for ~$60-70 that will get rid of the CEL.

The code for the air pump won't just come on a couple of times per year... It stays on after the readiness codes are checked if a fault is found. Check the codes BEFORE you buy the car.

Once the code is reset, the light will be off, but the ECU won't be "ready" until it goes though all its checks. OBD emissions testing will fail unless all the codes are ready.

But I can't find a place in Michigan that does emission testing. All I can get is like autozone reading the codes. And they said they need a engine light on when you come in

Well you won't pass emissions if he is just resetting the code. Autozone should be able to tell you if all the checks are in ready mode, even if the CEL isn't on.

He says he is not resetting the codes. The CEL just goes off a day later. He seems like a very honest seller. Obviously I can't know for sure though

Yeah, sure he is. Take it to a Honda dealer. They can tell you if codes are stored or if the ECU is not ready yet to be read for emissions.
