Looks like a ceramic like the inside of a kiln used as a gap filler.

Yeah, its some sort of ceramic filler to ensure the heat shields don't rattle, and it also insulates the heat.

The new sensor and CAT (with all the Honda required new bolts and gaskets) have been working fine now for a couple of weeks. No rattles or anything.
I sold the old CAT for $485 on eBay. It went to a scrap dealer in New York! I may have underestimated the scrap value of the thing. I guess I should have asked a couple of local scrap businesses what they would give me for it.

Oh well. It helped offset the $1100 cost of the new OEM made in Japan CAT.
