There is a ground that connects from the engine to the subframe. Would a poor ground connection here cause the dash to flicker and alternator problems?

I'm replacing my alternator in a few days (I ordered a Denso reman'd one from Rock Auto since my current one is making groaning noises/dash flickers (even though I replaced the rectifier)/and the battery is leaking most likely because the voltage regulator is fried). I just remembered that the last time I was under the car, the ground wire that connects the subframe to the engine looked quite frayed (I've attached some sample pictures below that I found on the forum, they do not resemble the condition of my ground wires). As the ends of the ground cable are not insulated, they have a greenish coating on them and the wires are frayed (separated, no longer in a tight coil like the sample pictures below)... could this be the culprit to my flickering dash and alternator issues? Is it worthy to replace this cable? Anyone know what gauge wire I should replace it with?

 

Cable is $7.42. I'd just buy a new one. And yeah....the wire sounds frayed and corroded as shit, a spotty ground connection can potentially cause issues. Regardless, the condition it's in definitely warrants replacement, especially considering how cheap it is.

Unfortunately I live in Canada and there is a 2 month backlog on this part. Otherwise I would replace it.

I guess I could pick up an aftermarket cable at the part store. Do you think 4 gauge would be sufficient?

Wrap a piece of string around the conductor (full width, not frayed, and not on the insulation) and mark it, then measure it with a ruler for the diameter to determine the gauge.

4 = .20"
3 = .23"
2 = .26"
1 = .29"
0 = .33"
00 = .36"
000 = .41"

 

That 4 gauge one you linked to is going to be fine.
I think I got that exact part laying in my garage if you want to know the exact length and gauge, I can check it later.

 

 

As Billman stated its not likely any ground, usually the rectifier that leads to flickering in the dash. Luckily ebay has them relatively cheap for our cars. My replacement is ~4 years old and still works great.

 

Bringing this back from the dead.

Is the left ground cable that is attached to the tranny coming directly from the starter motor? and I am assuming the the one on the right is attached to the subframe?

 

They are both on the block. Left one goes up to the body under the abs unit. Right drops down to the subframe.
