Default Engine life expectancy?

I own a 2009 with just under 30k miles which has just developed a worrying engine noise. It's got a full honda service history (last serviced about 400 miles ago). The honda garage assessing the fault reckons the noise is coming from lower in the block, possibly a piston/crank issue and has said they need to strip the engine to find the fault. Has anyone had a similar fault or any suggestions as to what might have failed? Typical too that the Honda Warranty ran out 18 days previously....

push for goodwill if thats the case (also being full honda service documented). Ridiculous. Unless the engine somehow was low on oil...

What do you call a "worrying engine noise"? How do you know the Honda garage isn't just seeing dollar signs in their eyes when you walked in the door? This car makes all kinds of "noises" normally. Just because it's making one that you don't normally hear in other cars doesn't mean something has "failed". If there is really something wrong and they gotta strip it down anyway, leave it till it fails, especially if it's running fine and doesn't exhibit any operational problems. A "noise" doesn't always mean something bad has happened. Gotta love some Honda dealers. They know less about the car than we do, that is until they see money in it.

the type of noise that might cause the level of concern would be rod knock, in which case it would make sense, rod knock is very evident to a good mechanic. If the car was ever run low on oil you have a good chance at that type of damage regardless of the age of the motor.

Also, it could be the timing chain tensioner - does the noise only happen at idle?
