Car now has an AEM 3.5 Bar MAP sensor. Bring on the boost!

GT3071. I know I can boost 23psi as that is what blew my engine (and a Ferrari 550M). LOL

I already have one.

I was just too busy humiliating a Ferrari.
Well I probably haven't fully understood what happened, but I thought it was due to overboosting. I'm surprised you didn't notice it was overboosting sooner? Or do you mean you already have a boost gauge but purchased it after the Ferrari incident?

I think he meant that he had a boost gauge, but was distracted by the hottie from Maranello and didn't notice he was overboosting.

I knew I had an overboosting problem and was driving conservatively.

Then I came across a Ferrari 550 Maranello and thought to myself "Ehhh, what harm can it do!".

Hmmm, the latest is not great news.

We were doing some tuning runs today and trying to resolve the overboost problem. Seems we've got that sorted.

Suddenly she is running like a dog. We pull over and she has overheated. Coolant is boiling in the reservoir, we're on 6 bars (with Modifry ECT) and there is some coolant on the block near cylinder 1 on the intake side. It's actually staining the 3mm head gasket.

Another strange thing is that the turbo manifold is glowing red hot. And as we'd sorted the overboost problem we'd only been boosting to 6psi.

When we reco'd the head we milled it for straightness. ANd we used new OEM bolts tightened to spec (Xftlbs and 3 x 90 degree turns) in the specified pattern.

We let it cool down for a while then started it up. It ran fine. We drove it the 10-15 Kms home without a problem (but we were not boosting at all).

Not really sure what to do now. I guess I will pull the cams and check how tight the head bolts are. Failing that I really don't know.

We think the exhaust manifold was hot red hot because the fuel was not igniting in one of the cylinders because of the coolant leak, and instead burning in the turbo/manifold. The turbo is water & oil cooled so this overheated the coolant, it was actually boiling in the expansion tank!!!

Otherwise it was driving like a dream and we had almost finished road tuning the boosted area. Even when it boosting outside of the MAP sensor range (hense receiving fuel for 11psi but running at 16psi and over) it ran lean with no sign of detonation.

Shame, so close, yet no cigar.

Awesome job on the build up - I hope that you do get things sorted and don't have to pull out too many things to get to the problem !!

Good luck !!
