I'm in the middle of disassembling my engine. I'm working towards removing the cylinder head. I had previously removed crank pulley and cam cover (I realize I should have done this after adjusting engine to TDC).
I tried to get the key that locks the crank pulley to the cam gear installed all the way but couldn't get it in completely. With the pulley on and the key in enough (I thought), I hand turned the pulley counterclockwise when viewed from front of engine. At first the crank and cam sprocket turned, but as I continued to turn the crank, the key must have slipped and as you can see from first photo, crank turned but not cam chain or cams - ugghh! A few questions:
1. Can I just turn crank clockwise until the key slots line up for crank pulley and cam gear?
2. How do I get the key to fully insert? It's tapered on one end. Taper seems to want to go in first, facing away from crank shaft but I can't get it in all the way and then get the pulley on.
3. I don't see the marks on the cam chain sprocket or intake and exhaust cams as shown in the service manual om page 6-30, step 28 to be able to confirm when I'm at TDC.
Second pic, left cam is almost at 9 o'clock right cam is just before 3. The crank key will not sit flush unless the crank angle sprocket is installed. There's a punch mark on the crank that you use to line up the chain to the cam gear in the head. The key goes tapered side down. Like the diffuser of a race car.

Thanks for the quick reply. Can I turn the crankshaft Clockwise to line up with cam sprocket? I assume so since when crank turned CCW by hand I didn't feel any resistance of valve interference.

I got the crank turned back, aligned with cam sprocket and rotated to TDC. I don't see the punch mark on the crank to line up chain to cam gear for proper reassembly. Is it hidden till I remove the cam chain sprocket? Just trying to make sure I don't screw this up.
