"backup" fuse under the dash. is i just a dissconnect and reconnect thing, or will i have to pull it for a few minutes?

an air fuel gauge shouldnt cause a check engine light.

Dave, you probably should add the "relearn engine idle" sequence to those instructions. The Helm manual is very specific about doing that procedure after an ECU reset.

I suppose if there was a problem with the idle before, then this would be a good idea. On none of the cars (my own included) where I've pulled the fuse, I've never done this and the idle afterwards is pretty normal.

i unplugged one of the ECU connectors and then put it back. The car wouldn't start, then started and wouldn't idle right. I unplugged the battery, plugged it back and the car was fine.

Why in the world would you go to the trouble of exposing the ECU (removing the kick-panel) and unplugging any of the connectors? Even with the ignition off, the ECU still gets power. Unplugging any connector only serves to confuse the hell out of the ECU. It's like disconnecting power to part of your brain, then reconnecting it and hoping that your whole brain works normal again.

Unless you are doing some major ECU wire tapping (like in a F.I. installation), disconnecting the battery is not necessary. To do a regular ECU reset only requires pulling the "BACK UP" fuse for a few seconds.
