Default Erratic Speedometer

My speedometer frequently (>50% of the time) operates in an erratic manner with the reading flickering from one random number to another. Cruise control will work during the few periods the reading is more or less stable, but obviously it can't follow when the erratic numbers start flashing and it kicks off. Sudden transitions seem to make it worse.

I searched this topic on the forum and the suggestions were (in my order):

1. Disconnect battery for at least 5 minutes
2. Check engine, firewall grounds for tightness
3. Replace speed sensor
4. ??

I have gotten to step 3 without success.

My shop - who is talking to Honda - is researching it. Presumably, it will require replacing the "main computer" - which I call the ECU - or the instrument cluster. I am ashamed to admit I don't know if these are distinctly separate units, but it seems I read somewhere they are integrated.

I am interested in hearing from anyone who has experience with this problem or knows about it. Apparently it's not a wide-spread problem but I am not the only one who has experience it.

As an aside, I'd like some suggestions on getting a good Factory/Repair manual. I am inclined to order the official Honda manual, even if it costs me.

Thanks in advance!

Have you checked negative ground wire on the battery?

Check the ground wire on the back of the cylinder head, it is the number one cause of erratic speedometer issues.
