Factory Torsen differential internal guts inspection, reassembly
Post is to share the detailed internals of a Torsen Type 2 and how it is assembled; timed -these units are rather set from the factory engineers and the only "tuning" would be to add/reduce drag - fluid changes would be more impacting.
the 8 identical worm gears are setup in pairs; paired worm gears will mate with side gears all at the same time in cluster formation; you can see from the wear marks on housing the orientation.
Torsen type 2 is also very good for engine braking; its decceleration bias is nice compared to a clutch type unit in that it won't as likely shift lock - it can't actually "lock up" like a clutch type unit can; but it can bias to maximize engine braking traction between rear wheels.
Now for some photos; T2 guts spilled out
When assembled to proper timing the fit into the capsule is very simple; slide it on.
