It is much cheaper to tool a curved sheetmetal bracket than it is to have to set up an angled milling surface.

My bet is your mystery manifold is pre-production that was good enough for post production... or Honda was doing some "value engineering"

or maybe someone put a JDM intake manifold and head and wiring harness on a USDM block. maybe the owner of the s2k bought it used and didn't know the previous owner did this work.

Well, this engine appears to have never been in a car, for long at least.

Maybe a pre-production crash test car? With the early serial #, I'm pretty sure this manifold and harness came with this block.

There was a thread back in the day about who had the earliest vin #s.

I don't think this engine made it to a production car.

I'll paypal anyone 5 bucks who can show me a pic of this engine in their car and give me some more info!

Bill,

do you know where the motor was purchased from...the motors I purchase from NJ usually are crash tested with about 11miles or less on them, but I never checked for such differences...if the motor came from there (Patterson, NJ) then most likely that is the scenario.

More weird crap

Backwards map...I tried to put it the normal way but it wasn't happening as the harness is too short:

This is neat as well....the front upper VTEC valve mounting hole in the head is not drilled all the way through. I had to use shorter bolts to mount the VTEC valve:

I guess it would be interesting to see the dyno plots on this thing...maybe there are some more weird things internally??

Maybe it's the way the picture was taken or the lighting between the two but the "Odd" intake appears to have a slightly thinner plenum with less volume or "meat" on the outside of it then then "Normal" one. It also appears to protrude deeper into the throttle body area....

Let the conspiracy theories begin...
