Default general maintenance- do it yourself

i have been changing my oil, oil filter and air filter myself for the past few years, but have not really done much else...
yes, i have an owners manual, but just think that lots of the "check this part" stuff is a waste of time- and maybe i am completely wrong!
if you do the maintenance yourself, do you really use the manual's maintenance items- and if not what do you do?

"Check" items are just that. You do a visual and maybe a "grab and wiggle" kind of thing. It's not hard and may very well save you a lot of grief later.
To check brake pads, for example, is a visual. Checking the serpentine belt is pretty simple, too. You look at it real carefully to see if it's cracked and you twist it to check the other side. Ball joints can be looked at to see if they are leaking. You can grab them and give them a bit of a tug in all directions. There should be minimal movement.
Honda makes pretty good products and these inspections are only in case you've done some unforseen damage.

You have a MY2000. I hope "somebody" have been doing clutch fluid, brake fluid, tranny fluid and diff fluid for you. Check the FAQs for threads on how to do those and on how to take care of your "rubbers" ------ your car has many critical rubbers that need attention on an annual basis.

xviper your DIY are extremely well written and helpful. As a new owner I am wondering what you are referring to when you mention taking care of "rubbers"
