Grinding from 1st the 2nd...help!
I have already posted the fact that I had a throw out bearing go bad on my 2000 bought with 10,000 miles on it. The dealer replaced he entire clutch and it still does he 1-2 grind even with the new clutch. The dealer knows about this problem and told me to keep driving it until it fails again. He said the transmissions on the s2000 are very complicated and they would not want to work on them. Even in the book on the s2000 I just read the problem was also mentiond so Honda has to know about it. I guess they think it's ok to drive it like this but I have to disagree with the idea to slow down the shifting. I have a Civic SI with a short throw shifter and I can speed shift it all with no grind. And compared to a Mazda Miata the S2000 gearbox shifts like crap. I guess this is something I'l have to live with but it should not have happened on a high performance car like this.
Popatop, the problem is not your clutch so a new one wouldn't help that (though it would affect "buzz during deceleration"). Honda admits the issue as requiring replacement of 1st and 2nd gear counter-shafts inside the tranny.

I will pass this on to the Honda mechanic that I know. I doubt though that they would want to replace anything in the tranny.
The problem is I will probably not put a lot of miles on the car so if this problem occurs again the warranty may expire then I'm screwed. I would probably replace the clutch with aftermarket product anyway.
Thanks

I would recommend changing the transmission fluid - at the dealership or do it yourself. Its inexpensive and easy to do. I do not have the grinding problem, but in discussions with Woodwork about the #3 notchy feeling, he suggested trying this. He went on to say that he's not sure why its been helpful for some folks but it has been... some were not as lucky. Its on my Spring to do list.
If you decide to change the tranny fluid be sure to inspect the oil for metal contamination. Although this is just speculation there may be a connection with the "grind" and failure of other components in the tranny further down the line. My tranny was going from bad to worse after the second TSB "grind" fix. Additional gears and assemblies within my tranny were suffering from all the loose metal produced by frequent grinding for 24,000 miles. Other failures were likely to occur. My car is still in service (since 8/7/01) but I'm told the transmission no longer grinds. Only a test drive will tell...
