Default head removal question

I'm about to remove the cam chain sprocket but noticed that there is not enough slack in the timing chain to remove the chain from the sprocket. The auto-tensioner has been removed. Looks like the only way to remove the chain is to first remove the sprocket's hardware and lower it (sprocket) slightly to allow the chain to come off.

Is this normal or is there a step that I am missing?

Remove the bolt that holds the sprocket to the head. The sprocket drops down and you can get the chain off, and the sprocket out the top. There is a spacer that goes between the sprocket and the head that will need to be fished out to get the sprocket out as well.
