Default Hex feature of cams

I'm going to adjust my S2000 valves, and will turn the cams to the right position by using an open-end wrench on the hex feature of the cams (I've done this on my CRV in the past - works great).

I had the valve cover off earlier and found that I don't have the right size wrench. So I don't have to open up the engine again just to measure the hex, can anyone tell me the right size?

Thanks in advance.

Aren't you supposed to turn the engine via the crank pulley for this type of job? By turning the cam itself, you are using it to turn the other cam and the rest of the engine. Is this such a good thing?

I know that's the usual way, and the way described in the manual. However, with the plugs out, the torque required to turn the cams (and everything else that turns) is quite small.

As I noted, I've done this on the CRV, and it went very smoothly. And it's easier, at least for me, than turning the crank.

My concern would be that in one instance, the crank pulley is driving the chain that turns the cams. In the other case, it's the cam that drives the chain that turns the rest. This might change the way the chain moves everything. Think about a pulley system where if you use one pulley as opposed to another and how this affect which side of the belt (or chain in this case) takes up slack.

I agree with xviper. When you turn the cam pulley, the chain is asserting a lot more tension on the chain tensioner than when the tensioner is just taking up the slack in the chain. It may or may not do any damage, but why not take a bit more effort and turn the crank instead of taking the risk of damaging the tensioner?

Now, about the size of the hex...? Somebody must have put a wrench on it to remove cam gears.
Hopefully, someone will see your thread and give you an answer.
I've looked through the Helm manual and it doesn't state the size of those bolts. It appears that there is hex shaped "holder" on the camshaft itself that you can put an open ended wrench onto. It doesn't give the size of this either. The people who wrote the manual must have figured once you get in there, you'll figure it out fast enough what size it takes.

I agree with above. Really bad idea to turn the crank using the cams. Why put unnecessary strain on the cam chain and tensioner? Per the Helm manual you are to turn the motor via crank bolt. It takes less than 10min to remove the air box to get clearance to the bolt.
